Cosmic Science Investigations: Earth 2.0: Virginia Living Museum

About Educational Resource

Cosmic Science Investigations: Earth 2.0 is a summer camp experience designed for children who have completed fourth or fifth grade during the previous academic year. The program uses a guided exploration model where the students were given a scenario (a “directive from Congress”) and then tasked with identifying questions that need to be answered, and answering them with guidance from their “Cosmic Science Investigations Team Leader.” Each day of the five-day camp focuses on answering a different question. The central question for this experience asks whether humanity could colonize an exoplanet should the Earth become unlivable.

This Program Model was developed and authored by Virginia Living Museum, with minimal editorial input and review from NASA's Universe of Learning. NASA's Universe of Learning has contributed astrophysics content and subject matter expertise to support the creation of this material.

Other organizations may adapt these materials to meet the needs of their specific audiences. While this Program Model was designed to serve the local audience of the authoring institution, it is shared here as an example for broader use. Users should adjust it as needed and use all or some of the content, as appropriate, for their own needs.

Goals and Recommendations

Goals

The goals for this camp experience were to give the students the opportunity to learn more about our home planet, what makes it a uniquely habitable world that needs protection and conservation, and learn about the science of discovering and categorizing exoplanets in an exciting and fun framework.

Recommendations

Flexibility is key. Be ready to assess what your group of campers enjoys doing most and tailoring the schedule to accommodate that.

The target audience for this camp experience is students who have completed either fourth or fifth grade in the previous academic year.
