Mission: The Universe: Pensacola MESS Hall

About Educational Resource

Mission: The Universe was designed to be a themed field trip for grades five through seven. These trips began with an interactive show that highlights the key learning goals of the trip in an engaging way. Students were then encouraged to experiment with the performer to answer a science question. Following the show, the students engaged in hands-on stations that reinforced the concepts. For this project, the show focused on astronomy and used astrophysics resources, including resources from NASA’s Universe of Learning.

This Program Model was developed and authored by the Pensacola MESS Hall, with minimal editorial input and review from NASA's Universe of Learning. NASA's Universe of Learning has contributed astrophysics content and subject matter expertise to support the creation of this material.

Other organizations may adapt these materials to meet the needs of their specific audiences. While this Program Model was designed to serve the local audience of the authoring institution, it is shared here as an example for broader use. Users should adjust it as needed and use all or some of the content, as appropriate, for their own needs.

Goals and Recommendations

Recommendations

One challenge for the Pensacola MESS Hall was adapting higher level activities for a hands-on field trip for upper elementary-age students. While the activities appear to be simple, the concepts proved to be difficult for fifth and sixth grade students to grasp in a short amount of time. Instead of leaving stations without facilitators, this iteration ended up staffing nearly all of the stations with either trained volunteers or staff. Moving forward, these concepts are better aligned to sixth grade and above educational standards.

The target audience of this program was fifth through seventh grade students from Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties in Florida and Baldwin County in Alabama.
