STEAM Programs: Cerritos Library

About Educational Resource

Cerritos Library created and implemented a variety of programs to engage the community in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) activities, including Robotics Night, Astronomy Night, Family Science Night, for families; and Science-N-Play and Art-In-Science after school for elementary school-age children. The poster exhibits offer information to the everyday visitor while providing a way to spark interest and promote the new STEAM programing the library provided.

This Program Model was developed and authored by Explora Science Center & Children’s Museum, with minimal editorial input and review from NASA's Universe of Learning. NASA's Universe of Learning has contributed astrophysics content and subject matter expertise to support the creation of this material.

Other organizations may adapt these materials to meet the needs of their specific audiences. While this Program Model was designed to serve the local audience of the authoring institution, it is shared here as an example for broader use. Users should adjust it as needed and use all or some of the content, as appropriate, for their own needs.

Goals and Recommendations

Goals

  1. Offer quality and engaging STEAM classes and activities for the community.
  2. Inspire participants and show the relationship that math and science have with creativity, invention and problem solving.

Recommendations

Use the exhibit posters. They are easy to print and display, and supplement the programming nicely.

The target audience for the hour-long after-school programs were children ages 6 to 12.  Specifically, the Science-N-Play program was designed for ages 6 to 7 and the Art-In-Science was designed for ages 8 to 12.  The Robotics Night, Astronomy Night, Family Science Night were designed to engage families both young and old, providing an opportunity for all family members to learn together.
