INFORMAL LEARNING NETWORK

About this Project

Adapt NASA resources in innovative ways to better suit your local audience.

Welcome to Our Network

The NASA's Universe of Learning Informal Learning Network is a dynamic collaboration between informal learning institutions and experts from NASA's astrophysics missions. Together, we strive to make the wonders of the universe accessible to all, fostering a community that thrives on curiosity, discovery, and inclusivity.

Our Mission

Enrich science learning and public engagement with NASA's cutting-edge astrophysics discoveries, missions, and data by integrating accessible astrophysics resources and activities into the programs offered by museums, science centers, libraries, and other informal education environments across the nation. We aim to inspire audiences by bringing the universe closer to home.

What We've Achieved

Over the past eight years, the Informal Learning Network has transformed the landscape of informal STEM education through the co-creation of innovative programming that leverages NASA's astrophysics resources. Highlights include:

  • Innovative Program Models: The network has developed over 50 program models. This programming ranges from one-day science festivals to year-long after-school initiatives to early learner STEAM activities.
  • Professional Development: Dozens of experts from the informal education community have participated in tailored professional development sessions, enhancing their capacity to engage audiences with complex scientific content.
  • Community Leadership: Network members have become key players in building regional networks and community hubs, significantly expanding the reach and impact of NASA's Universe of Learning.

Current Initiatives

The Informal Learning Network is more active than ever, funding and supporting projects that bring astrophysics learning to all communities. Programs currently running across the nation include:

  • Interactive Exhibits that allow visitors to explore the cosmos through hands-on experiences.
  • Digital Storytelling Sessions where the latest NASA discoveries are brought to life through compelling narratives.
  • Community Science Events that engage participants with real NASA scientists and the latest astrophysics research.

Join Us

We invite all informal learning institutions to join our network. By collaborating with us, you gain access to:

  • Exclusive Funding Opportunities to innovate and expand your STEM programming.
    • Funding is limited to members organizations of Association of Science and Technology Centers and Smithsonian Affiliations.
  • Community Driven Professional Development that expands horizons on what’s possible in astrophysics learning.
  • A Platform for Collaboration where you can connect with peers, share resources, and enhance your programs.

Featured Resources

  • After School Programming: Intro to Astronomy: Pinhead Institute

Children at a table with books, laptops and astronomical cards

At the Pinhead institute, an introduction to astronomy was incorporated into a variety of after-school programs, including a weekly two-hour after-school program for participants in third through sixth grade.

  • Tactile Explorations of Extrasolar Objects: Science Central

    Extrasolar tactile explorations program materials

This tabletop activity by Science Central uses 3D printed representations of objects beyond the Solar System to give participants a sense of the scale of extrasolar objects and allow participants with low vision or tactile learning styles to have the opportunity to learn more about astronomy.
